Governance lookback: see your organisation as it was on any date

Your organisation is a living thing. Roles are created, circles split, accountabilities move, policies come and go. In Nestr, every one of those governance changes, whether made by a person in a meeting or by an AI agent filling a role, is recorded as it happens. Governance lookback turns that record into a time machine: rewind to any date and see your roles and circles exactly as they were.

Why you'll love this

  • Nothing is ever lost. A role removed two years ago is still there to look at, complete with the purpose, accountabilities and domains it had at the time.
  • Every change is traceable. Decisions link back to the proposals that made them, and lookback shows you the structure each decision produced. So an audit question like "what did our organisation look like when we made that call?" takes seconds, not archaeology.
  • Built for humans and AI agents alike. As agents start proposing and processing governance alongside people, one trustworthy history of who changed what, and when, becomes essential. Lookback is that history, made visible
Move back and forth through the history of your organisation to see what changed and when.

Travel back from the org map

  1. Open the org map and expand it to full screen using the expand icon that appears when you hover over the map.
  2. Hover over the map again and click the history icon (a small clock with an arrow). A timeline appears, running from the day your workspace was created to today.
  3. Drag the slider to any moment, or click the date next to it to pick a day from a calendar.

The map redraws to show your organisation as it was at that moment. Roles and circles that were later deleted come back into view, anything created after the date disappears, and renamed items show the names they had then. A banner across the top keeps you oriented: Viewing your roles and circles as they were on Mar 5, 2026. Click into any circle or role to read its purpose, accountabilities, domains and policies as they were on that day.

Enter look back mode by clicking the history icon on the circle/role view

Done exploring? Click back to today in the banner, the × next to the timeline, or drag the slider back to the right edge.

Follow a removed role from a proposal

The other way in starts from a decision. When a governance proposal removes a role, circle or policy, the removed item stays visible in the proposal's list of changes — in the proposal itself and in the governance meeting report. Hover over it and Nestr offers: Click to view this in context, as it was just before it was removed.

One click takes you back to the moment just before the deletion. A removed role opens next to the circle it lived in, with everything it held at the time; a removed circle opens on its own, showing the roles it contained. The timeline is active too, so you can keep exploring from there. Slide further back to see how the structure evolved before the removal.

History is read-only

Lookback can never rewrite the past. While you are viewing history, editing is paused: if you try to change something, Nestr lets you know that changes can't be saved while viewing governance history. Head back to today to make your change. Looking back is also personal, it only changes what you see, while your colleagues keep working in the present.

How far back can you look?

On the Pro plan (a Pro trial counts) you can travel all the way back to the day your workspace was created.

On other plans, lookback reaches one month into the past. Pick an older date and the slider gently stops at the one-month mark, with a note that governance history is limited to 1 month on your current plan. Workspace admins can upgrade right from that message; members can ping their admin from it. See Pricing & plans for what is included on each plan.

Either way, your history is recorded in full from day one. The limit only affects how far you can look, not what is kept. Upgrading later unlocks the whole archive.

Good to know

  • Lookback covers your governance structure: circles, roles, accountabilities, domains and policies. Day-to-day work such as projects and todos is not part of it. Deleted work items have their own safety net in Recovering deleted items.
  • The history icon appears on the full-screen org map in workspaces with self-organisation enabled.
  • Everyone in the workspace sees the same reconstruction, you are all looking at the same single source of truth, just at a different moment in time.
