Custom fields: add the data you need

Custom fields let you add the exact data your organisation needs to any type of item. Configure a field once on a label and every item of that type gets it automatically. New to labels? Start with The power of labels. To set objectives and key results, see the OKRs app.

Custom fields

Labels can carry custom fields, letting you add structured data to any item type. Custom fields are configured at the label level, so every item with that label automatically gets those fields.

Setting up custom fields

1. Go to Workspace settings → Labels, Fields & Tabs.
2. Select or create a label.
3. Add a field and choose its type from the list below.

For example, add a project status dropdown to your project label, and every project will carry a status you can group and filter by.

The field types you can add

Choose the type that matches the data you want to capture:

• Text field: a single line of text.
• Multiline text field: longer text across several lines.
• HTML text field: formatted, rich text.
• Number field: a plain number.
• Currency field: a monetary amount.
• Percentage field: a percentage.
• Slider field: pick a value along a slider.
• Range field: a value within a defined range.
• Formula field: a value calculated from other fields.
• Drop down list: choose one option from a list, such as project status.
• Multi-select drop down list: choose several options from a list.
• Label drop down selector: choose from your labels.
• Checkbox field: a simple yes or no.
• Date: a calendar date.
• Term selector: pick a period such as a week or quarter.
• Nest link: link to another item in Nestr.
• URL: a web link.
• User: pick a person from your workspace.

Ordering your fields

Fields appear on an item in the order they sit in the settings list, so moving a field up moves it higher on the item. There is no order number to set: the position in the list is the order.

• Drag: take hold of the grip at the left of a field's row, the two columns of dots, and drop the field where you want it.
• Arrows: hover over a field's row and up and down arrows appear on the right, beside the delete icon.

The options inside a drop down list have an order of their own. Open the field and drag an option by its grip to move it. That is the order people see in the picker, and it carries through to the columns when you group a view by that field.

Click Save when you are done. Tabs reorder the same way, on the same screen. See Customising tabs.

Your own labels and the built-in ones

You can add fields to the workspace labels you create yourself, and to Nestr's built-in labels such as project, role or circle. Customising a built-in label extends it with your own fields without changing what it already does.

Role fields reach role templates too

Fields you add to the Role label at workspace level also appear on your role templates, so a template can carry a value for them and every role made from it starts with that value. Fields scoped to a single circle, and fields on other labels, stay off templates. See Role templates and core roles.

Changes flow down through your circles

Fields you set at the workspace level apply everywhere that label is used. A circle can then customise the same label for itself, adding a field or hiding one it does not need, and a circle nested inside it can customise again. Each level inherits from the one above and can override it, so a team can tailor a label to its own way of working without changing it for everyone else.

You do this from the circle rather than from the workspace. Open the circle, go to its Settings → Labels, Fields & Tabs, and pick the label under Customize a system label or Customize a workspace label. When you save, Nestr asks whether the change applies to just this circle, or to this circle and everything nested inside it.

Creating a label, renaming it, giving it a colour and deleting it all stay at the workspace level. Inside a circle you change how a label behaves there, not the label itself.
