Objections and Tensions

Categories:

In Sociocracy, objections are reasoned arguments for why a proposal would cause harm or move the circle backward. They are not personal preferences or improvement suggestions. A valid objection identifies a specific risk that the proposal creates, and the group must integrate it before moving forward.

The objection process is what gives consent-based decision-making its rigour. It prevents both steamrolling (ignoring real concerns) and blocking (using objections to stall progress). By testing objections against clear criteria, teams learn to distinguish between genuine risks and discomfort with change.

Nestr supports objection handling within its governance meeting workflow. Objections are recorded alongside the proposals they relate to, and the integration process is tracked step by step. The governance playback preserves the full history of how objections shaped the final outcome.
