Holarchy

Categories:

A holarchy is a structure made of nested, semi-autonomous units called holons. Each holon is both a whole in itself and a part of something larger. In organisational terms, this translates to circles that have their own authority and purpose while fitting into a broader structure.

Holarchy offers an alternative to both rigid hierarchy and flat chaos. It preserves the coordination benefits of structure while distributing authority to the level where decisions are best made. Each circle can adapt independently without waiting for permission from the top.

Nestr is built around holarchic principles. Circles nest within circles, each with their own roles, domains, policies, and governance. The platform makes the full structure visible and navigable, so people can understand both their local circle and how it connects to the organisation as a whole.
